Man sieht den Goldenen Turm in Regensburg im Nebel hinter Ästen eines Baumes. From January 2026, the Golden Tower student residence in Regensburg's old town will undergo extensive renovation.

STWNO is renovating the Golden Tower (Goldener Turm) student residence in Regensburg's old town. The building, which is over 800 years old and a Regensburg landmark, is being extensively modernised to preserve it for decades to come and offer students contemporary living space.

Extensive renovation

The Golden Tower and the adjacent buildings between Wahlenstraße and Untere Bachgasse will undergo extensive renovation starting in January 2026. The focus will be on fire safety measures, the renewal of water, sewage and heating systems, and the renovation of fixtures and surfaces. Settlement cracks in the masonry will also be professionally inspected and repaired. The work is expected to last throughout 2026. During this time, all 43 students and the local businesses will have to move out. The passageway through the courtyard is expected to be completely closed at times.

Space for more students

Once the construction work is complete, additional living space will be created: a total of seven new residential units will be added. This means that in future, the Golden Tower will offer even more students the opportunity to live in one of Regensburg's most historic buildings.

Historical heritage, modern use

The Golden Tower dates back to two Romanesque stone houses from 1200 and dominates the cityscape with its approximately 50-metre-high tower. Despite its age, the landmark remains stable – cracks in the masonry do not compromise its structural integrity. After the renovation, the students will return to a modernized, technically renovated and historically unique residential complex. The commercial units on the ground floor will also be re-let.

With the renovation of the Golden Tower, STWNO is combining monument preservation with modernity – and preserving a piece of Regensburg's history for future generations.
