Registration

International students, like German citizens, have to register their place of residence with the registration of address office/citizens' administrative office ("Einwohnermeldeamt/Bürgerbüro).

If you have found an apartment, a room in a residential complex or a shared apartment in Germany, you have to register in your new university city within two weeks. This also applies to every change of address!

To register, you need a passport or identity card as well as a certificate of your address in Germany. This can be your current rental agreement or, if you live in a Sudentenwerk's residential complex, a certificate from the home owner ("Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung"). This will be sent to you together with the rental agreement. Present this certificate to your caretaker when you move in. The caretaker will sign the certificate for you and you can present it to the registration of address office/citizens' administrative office.

Important: Remember to de-register at the registration of address office/citizens' administrative office before leaving Germany. If you do not de-register, you will still be listed as a citizen by the city or municipality after your departure.
