What does studying in Germany cost? The answer to this question of course depends on the lifestyle. Nevertheless, there are costs that everyone must reckon with, because you have to pay for rent, food, transport and books for your studies. On the following sub-pages we name sources of finance and other useful tips that will help you financially master your studies in Germany.

Current notice! Problems with the blocked account provider BAM! (Nationwide facility management UG)

Some international students are currently experiencing disbursement problems with the blocked account provider BAM! (Nationwide facility management UG). As far as we know, the accounts (at Aareal Bank) are frozen and the money is initially safe. The BaFin (banking supervisory authority) and the LKA determine. The Federal Foreign Office has been informed and writes that a solution for accounts that have already been opened is currently being worked on.

UPDATE (07/23/2021) The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority has instructed the accounts to be processed. The installments from July and August 2021 will be transferred to those affected in the next few days. New customers who have not yet received a payment are asked to provide Aareal Bank with their account details. BaFin asks you to open new blocked accounts with a credit institute approved in Germany in order to be able to arrange for the funds deposited to BAM to be transferred.

The immigration authorities have been informed of the case by the Federal Ministry of the Interior for Homeland and Building and have been asked that BAM customers do not suffer any disadvantages in terms of residence law if they can prove that they have applied for a new blocked account with another provider in good time and have informed Aareal Bank AG about the new account details.

All relevant information can be found on the website of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority.

If you are also affected, please contact the social counseling staff of the Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz or the International Office of your university or the responsible Aareal Bank directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
